Is Multiplayer A Necessity These Days?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution features over 25 hours of story driven gameplay for us to uncover when it launches this August. However it doesn't feature any kind of multiplayer whatsoever.

It got me thinking - is multiplayer a necessity for gaming these days? I personally applaud the developers for focusing on the single-player element. When games like Dead Space 2 have a multiplayer component tacked on for the sake of it, it tends to piss me off more than anything.

How important is multiplayer to the success of a title these days?
I dont think its necessary. At first i was a bit angry when i heard the made a multiplayer for infamous 2 but when i found out it was just a create thing i was happy.. I think some games should just be single player.. Id be so pissed if they put multiplayer on the new elder scrolls..

uncharted

so unnecessary
I've never actually played the Uncharted multiplayer - it's always been about the single-player in my books. However everyone seems to really enjoy UC3's MP. Still don't think it's warranted?
these days I mostly play games for the single player, there's only a handful of games that I occasionally jump into for the odd game of deathmatch, I find most games just have MP tacked on to try and curb trade ins, I say focus on your strengths, if your game lends itself to a great MP experience, awesome put it in, if not, I'd rather they put the resources into the single player
Totally agree with you @noobi - couldn't have said it beter myself!
@noobi Totally agree.
It's not necessary, but it sweetens the deal, Dead Space 2 for example. It may not be good in any way, but I like knowing that theirs something I haven't explored or mastered in a game that will probably collect dust on my shelf after completion. It's not as much about me actually wanting to play it, but it just gives me another reason for purchasing a game I'm more interested in for its campaign as opposed to renting.
Really? So if you were interested in the campaign and it didn't have multiplayer you probably wouldn't have bought it anyway?

I buy Dead Space for the story, the atmosphere and the gameplay - not some half-baked multiplayer that was tacked on to appease the publisher. If anything the fact it exists made me hesitant to purchase the game.
It depends on the game and the person.

Games where the characters are paramount and are important to the story need multiplayer less. That is why games such as Uncharted, Assassins Creed will have people moan about the introduction of multiplayer as it was originally about the story and development of the characters that made it SO satisfying as a single player experience.

Sports games like FIFA i think are definitely enhanced by it.

another thing is that except for a handful of big releases the MP servers just become a dead zone two months after release, I remember buying army of two around a year after it came out and I couldn't even get a single co-op game happening, let alone multiplayer
Let me give you an example, Bioshock. I have that game sitting on my shelf, I bought it on release date for full price. When Bioshock 2 released, I had it pre-ordered. To be honest I didn't even know much about its multiplayer and have only tried 3 games to this date, my main focus was on its campaign which was weak compared to the first. I have both titles sitting on my shelf, but I feel like I got my moneys worth with the second. It's just that feeling knowing that I can always jump back into it and not just have to replay set missions over and over again, knowing that their is something more to do, unlike the first where all I can do is replay its campaign for the 4th time.
Good point @way_maker when I made this thread I didn't even consider sports titles.

I wouldn't buy NHL without multiplayer, that's for sure.

However I'd prefer Bioshock didn't have some form of cruddy Deathmatch tacked on.
doesnt bother me in the least

i didnt expect much from ac brotherhood but i found myself every afternoon after work jumping online and looking for a room to play in

while my main aspect of a game is always ALWAYS the campaign mode i do welcome any extras provided
call of duty

unnecessary
For me, aslong as the quality of the campaign doesn't get compromised, a multiplayer component is welcome. I won't ever have to play them, but it's just nice knowing it's there.
Not sure if serious -_-
games will stop getting tacked on multiplayer when reviewers stop docking points of games without multiplayer

weeeh
I think the multiplayer in uncharted was not needed, the game is fine without it. But now I enjoy the multiplayer more than the campaign, which kinda annoys me.

Fair call really. However I'd never take points from Uncharted for not having MP.

@renagadez - yeah CoD guy.
Adding multiplayer to games like AC Brotherhood always bothers me because I feel it inevitably leads to a compromised single player. We'll never know for sure, but imagine what they might have done if they had the extra time and memory to spend on the story.
Definitely a concern @Skidmark when I think about the few things I didn't like about Dead Space 2 I wonder if they could have perhaps fixed them up by not spending the time or the man power making that multiplayer component. Always a concern.
I dunno, I found the multiplayer in AC: Brotherhood to be rather fun and mind-screwy.
Is this a serious question, Of Course it is, What would you do with the game if it only had Single player? Play it over and over again, Hmmmm Don't think so.
