Is Multiplayer A Necessity These Days?

Deus Ex: Human Revolution features over 25 hours of story driven gameplay for us to uncover when it launches this August. However it doesn't feature any kind of multiplayer whatsoever.

It got me thinking - is multiplayer a necessity for gaming these days? I personally applaud the developers for focusing on the single-player element. When games like Dead Space 2 have a multiplayer component tacked on for the sake of it, it tends to piss me off more than anything.

How important is multiplayer to the success of a title these days?
Have you played it since GamersFirst took over? It's actually good now :P

Stupidest thing I've ever read on this site... ever.

People play games for the single player. Anybody that games purely for online is gaming for the wrong reasons. Some of the best games this generation have been those with no multiplayer... Heavy Rain, Dead Space, Uncharted, Condemned, BioShock, LA Noire, Mass Effect, inFamous, Oblivion, Fallout 3 - do I need to go on?.

You then back up this by saying games like King Kong needed multiplayer because it only took you 4 hours to finish. I have to ask, but why are you playing King Kong in the first place?! It was an awful game and one that barely anybody bought, you probably wouldn't even be able to get an online game even if it had it.

Silly Cuda.

so unnecessary

Oh see I really enjoyed the multi player aspect of Uncharted. Its super fun to play along side a friend.
I don't think multiplayer is a neccessity, but cooperative multiplayer could be used better. There are alot of games I have played that would benefit greatly (imo) from a little coop. There are games like god of war 3 (that I am currently playing, awesome game) that just wouldn't work, but there are other single player games, like mass effect, that could be expanded if you have a couple of friends, going around the galaxy doing missions together. That would be fun.

Competitive multiplayer on the other hand, for the most part needs to be backed up on a bit. Seriously why bring out every game with a "deathmatch" or "ctf" style online multi when it will get played for maybe a few weeks at best before everyone goes back to the games that do it better. You have the COD series, the battlefield series, counterstrike, team fortress and so many others that basically live off the multiplayer aspect, why spend so much time and money adding multi to a game that doesn't need it (ala dead space 2) when you could make the single player AI better, or improve on the graphics just a touch?
There will always be a place for competitive gameplay, I'm not disputing that at all. Fact of the matter is though we definitely need to see more co-op in gaming this day and age.

Some of the best times I have online are with co-op games with friends - it's hard to beat a game of Borderlands or grouping up in APB or playing through the Halo Reach campaign with a good bunch of mates.

I really would love to see more AAA co-op titles out there :)

Disagree. Video games are not exclusive to individualism. Multiplayer games are fueled by competitiveness, and everything we do in our lives in fueled by that.

I didn't say multiplayer isn't an important part of gaming, it certainly has its place. But those that say they only play online are certainly playing for the wrong reason. What makes games amazing is their single player, no game is ever going to be called one of the greats based purely on its multiplayer. Every game starts at the single player mode and in most cases if a game has a lame single player mode we won't buy it.

The only multiplayer game I would say changes this is WOW.
Not every game. Call of Duty is not a single-player game. I would argue that anyone playing COD for single-player is playing THAT for the wrong reasons.

I play CoD for it's single-player and achievements.

Multiplayer is just another aspect of the game that i tend to play alot of. Every CoD i've gotten i've played the SP first. Then go back mop up achievements / 1000 it later on.

COD use to have epic single player campaigns which you could tell the developer put a lot of time into. I would argue that it started as a single player game.

COD isn't considered a great franchise, by video gamers or critics. It is now seen as a yearly rehash of the same old same old. COD4 was greatly received because of its epic single player and stunning multiplayer, but I guarentee it wouldn't have been as well received without its single player mode.

So my point in the previous post still stands.
Yeah the single-player of CoD was nice back in the day....now it's just an ugly afterthought pushed down the stairs a few times.

Seriously though - why must every topic be related to that behemoth? I'm sick of reading CoD and BF3 right now haha.
@ original question..

good multiplayer is much more of a deal sweetener than a 90+ metascore will ever be. sad, but that's the way it is.

But why is that sad? I don't get that argument. Why is someone wanting to engaging with a competitive, active community sad?
Because it doesn't tell a story. It doesn't hold weight it's just provides a wham, bam, thank-you m'aam experience. That's not a bad thing, it just doesn't provide a memorable experience to me.

The fact that people would rather pay for lower-quality products, which encourages the production of these products and discourages developers who make near-perfect games for no reward, just to be competitive and have a few more points by their in-game name?

I would rather the developer of Deus Ex didn't feel like they had to throw in some multiplayer when this title inevitably sells below expectations.

e: and this is a poorly worded post. give me until tomorrow before you pick at my argument :P
Considering Deus Ex has no multiplayer whatsoever i don't really see why you are using them as an example?

Heller said: Considering Deus Ex has no multiplayer whatsoever i don't really see why you are using them as an example?

Maybe he thinks it has multiplayer in it?

I actually wouldn't care if Deux Ex had multiplayer cause we are already getting an epic 25 hour single player. Multi would be tacked on but the SP is so worthwhile that it doesn't matter (same goes for RDR and GTA IV).
no way ,a good game doesnt need multi attatached

Heller said: Considering Deus Ex has no multiplayer whatsoever i don't really see why you are using them as an example?

Because, if they tacked on multiplayer in the next iteration, the focus in the series would likely be lsot and the single player portion of the game would, in all likelihood, not live up to the quality of previous games.

I used them as an example because developers with low sales of good games probably often feel that the lack of multiplayer modes is what causes poor performance on the market. They GENERALLY sell well but what happens if this next game just happens to flop, even if it has a 85-90+ metascore?

DPkrass said: no way ,a good game doesnt need multi attatached

I always knew I liked you :)

@Harry - I don't think its the developers that feel they should offer multiplayer, I often think it is the publisher that becomes the culprit. They see it as a chance to broaden the market while in fact it quite often detracts from the experience.
yeah that's what i meant. the point stands. when multiplayer puts in out of need to survive instead of because it being a fitting addition, then gamw quality generally goes down.
Exactly - I think Dead Space 2 is the perfect example of a game that just didn't need a multiplayer component. The fact that it featured one still flabbergasts me.
