Is Robin still cool?

17354 Views 103 Posts PS3 Software

Robin's back in Batman Arkham City, and looking much tougher than I remember him.

But do we really want him back? I've kind of been enjoying Robin-less Batman in both films and games.
While we're on the topic of the comics, some advice please? I've always been interested in western comics, especially Batman, but the multiverses, changing writers and sheer backlog have always put me off.
So yeah, any suggestions on what series to start with?
Start with Year One.

Much obliged.

E: Holy crap, Frank Miller [Derp]
Then the Long Halloween (My fave) and then The Dark Knight :P

@Elraro that's certainly is how the character of Robin started out. The character, much like that of Batman has evolved over the years. I don't think where these two characters started out is necessarily still relevant today.

Batman is a criminal. He's a vigilante. He beats people up on a regular basis. Criminals or not that is against the law. The real issue is that he has crossed a line that society doesn't condone. If you picked up the newspaper this morning and read about this kind of thing your reaction would differ to that held for a fictional character.

Robin is redemption while Alfred represents morals and ethics which ties directly into what you're saying. On the night his parents were killed, so was Bruce Wayne. Batman was born, the mask he wears is that of Bruce Wayne, Batman is his true face.

When Dick Grayson's parents are killed, he steps in. His empathy for the parallels in their lives is what drives him. His "saving" Dick Grayson is symbolic of him saving himself when his parents were killed.

The real problem is that no one wants Batman to find redemption. This is a character that won't ever truly be allowed to find peace. He will have to carry his pain to the grave and die fighting crime.

@DonnieK trolling? Really?

@Silence don't let the different interpretations of the character put you off. Year One is great. I'd check out the Grant Morrison JLA after that. It will give you an idea of how he fits in in the greater DC Universe. Also Mirrison writes one he'll of a Batman.

@Shiv my Long Halloween and Dark Victory runs have all been signed by Loeb. uJelly?

DC reboots in september. 52 brand new 1st issues. pretty much ignoring most of the past to make it fresh for new readers. examples are that superman and lois arent married, wildstorm and vertigo characters are being mixed in, bruce wayne is now he only batman again, barbra gordan can walk and is batgirl again.
@Rashy
Yet to read Dark Victory :P

I have absolute editions of Long Halloween and The Dark Knight.

But yer, I'm jelly :'@
Well he does look pretty bad ass so meh another character!!
TBH I wish they would stop releasing something about this game every second game, I wont need to play it as it seems they have pretty well revealed everything
@Rashy Fair enough, Mr. Rashsta. I think if the writers can re-write Robin to be darker and genuinely more interesting then I think they can easily make him "cool" once again or at least relevant.
For me the promise of Robin is that Batman is training the ultimate Batman in Robin. Robin is being trained by the best by the best. He's trained from a younger age and has a huge head start on Batman. The comparison to Damian is interesting too.

Dick Grayson has had an awesome character arc. I don't want to ruin the payoff for Robin but check out Batman RIP.

I think the real question should be "Is Robin still sexy?" [MOG]
I thought Batman was a detective? :O
Isn't he like, apart of the police or some authority of law? :S
The world greatest detective.

And no, how have you not seen any Batman films? :P
I have :P

It's just usually, films butcher the original Bio or background of fictional characters that come from comics or books :P

'The Dark Knight' is a movie. 'The Dark Knight Returns' is the graphic novel you're talking about.

If you want something completely different (and extremely disturbing), get Arkham Asylum. Be warned as it's not your typical Batman comic and it's considered a horror.

Matrix6 said: spoilt?? oh well, that's too bad, a true batman fan would've seen this movie already...last year. So, I'll need to rewatch this again for more pleasure not that he's in a game, though not the same Robin.

No they wouldn't have at all, Batman is one of my faves but I have not watched it yet but i will now

My bad, I guess a true Batman would have ALL the comics as they release and probably think most of these animated movies are a disgrace and not true to the comic?!?
Yeah, I highly recommend this as it's one of the better ones I've watched from all the DC and Marvel animated movies. Marvel Knights series are also cool but different and a bit weird. Even the Marvel Knights - Spider-Woman: Agent Of S.W.O.R.D is pretty awesome, kinda like the Pulp Fiction of animated movies. Has a very Manga feel to it in a Western form. I recommend that as well. Here's a preview trailer,;
Warning: Has violence with blood in it unlike most animated movies

@DonnieK I never thought of Robin as "cool" per se, but my fave live action version is the one from the 60's [or whatever era it was] version. It was so funny and gay LoL.

I would say complete fanatic would i dont have any comics are watch animated movies but i still am a really huge fane of batman but i dont read comics full stop i might look into these animated ones though. I will have a look as soon as i have access to computer

The Marvel Knights ones are actually animated comics, rather than animated films.

The Spider-woman one is illustrated by one of my favourite artists of all time. Alex Maleev, seriously you should google him. He's done a lot of work on Daredevil with the same writer, Brian Michael Bendis, who is also exceptional.

Ah, god I'm a nub.
I didn't think it was called that, but I looked at the spine of my absolute edition which just reads The Dark Knight. (Which I now realize is because it also includes the sequel.... :P)

And Arkham Asylum is the only other one I've read :P
Hahaha yeah the Absolute Edition rocks.

The Dark Knight Returns is my 2nd favorite Graphic novel of all time, just behind Watchmen. Interestingly, the themes of both books are very similar.
loved the long halloween. the batman black and white short story volumes have a few gems in them too.

No :P
Robin can pretty cool, especially in the more modern Batman comics.

TIM DRAKE

though it's really unfair to compare him with
The problem for Robin was always going to be that Batman would always be seen as the main man. Having a name like "Robin" does not help either.

Still cool? You mean this was cool?

Honestly things could only get better for the guy.
