So I was just perusing the internet and found a news article regarding a possible name change for Nintendo's brand new console, the Wii U, due for release later this year.

The possibilty of a name change seems plausible as it, while being a next-gen system, contains the name of Nintendo's current home console, the Wii. There was mass confusion over the release of the 3DS last year as consumers didn't know what the 3DS was. They weren't sure if it was able to play DS only games in 3D. Now, Nintendo could possibly be thinking this could be an issue with the Wii U.

I personally have gotten used to the name, but I was one of the people who live streamed the very first Wii U conference last year, and as soon as the Wii U logo came up, I thought, "What The Hell?!?". I think the main reason I didn't like it was because it had Wii in the name. I love Nintendo and how they release new system names for their consoles, but this just seemed a little silly.

So, who thinks Nintendo should change the name of their next-gen console? Are you happy with the name now, or would like to see a completely new name?

I just don't like the wii being part of it. Maybe call it the Nintendo U. Or ewe or you. It has one syllable as wii so it could work

The Wii was such a huge success with the casual market I can see why Nintendo wanted to keep the Wii name. Unfortunately the casual market in not very knowledgable. I can see a lot of confusion with people thinking thu U is some sort of add on to the existing Wii.

They should defiently change the name. I have never been a fan of "Wii U" as a name. Its a totally new console, with so much more to offer it needs a distinctive name to set it appart from the current Wii.
I'm thinking the "Nintendo Urine" :P
but seriously Rename the damn thing!

The casual numpties will probably just keep playing the current Wii for the next few years, just keep feeding the shovelware :P

I think a name change would be a good idea, personally I hated the name Wii and was hoping it would get dropped with the next system.

So... are people forgetting that there is a ps3? And xbox 360? Wii u is more unique than wii 2 and shows that its more of a 3 1/2 gen console
But a name change wouldnt be bad

People who don't know any better will still think that it's just some sort of add-on to the current Wii. Whereas the PS3 had the 2 change into a 3, making it more distinguishable that it was an entirely new console. People won't grasp the concept as easily with the Wii U because it has two different words. Well, that's just what I think. :P

Looking back on past Nintendo consoles, they were all labelled 'Nintendo 64' , or 'Nintendo Entertainment System'. They always included the Nintendo part in the title. But not with the Wii. It was just labelled 'Wii'. I think with the Wii U, they need to get rid of the confusing 'Wii' part (and possibly the 'U', as well) and come up with an original name which also incorporates their own name into the title, as well as a unique feature of the system.

Like, 'Nintendo Go' and the motto could be something like 'Play while on the go - even in the can!'
