I think there is a way through the HBC.
Indeed there is a way to do it through the homebrew channel. But seeing as you just plugged your USB in and assumed your Wii would read the movies i'm guessing you have no idea what that is so i'm not going to bother to explain it.

If you really are curious about all the homebrew stuff check out:
wiibrew.org
wiinewz.com
you'll have to use an SD card through the photo channel
You can play them though your USB prots on your computer, but not the wii

that doesn't work

I used to do that with short videos but you need to convert them first.

I converted some Pixar Shorts for the nieces and nephews. Ripped them from dvd and used Red Kawa's Wii video convertor to put them on SD and it worked a treat.

E. I did exactly what Guyver just posted.

So like, by putting "full length" movies (which has been converted via the "wii video 9" program) on an 2gig (minimum?) SD Card, you are able to watch it on your wii, in the photo channel?

After the file converting process, is there anything you must do for this to work? (like having other video files on the SD card.. kinda like how you can't load games off the SD card on the new wii menu kinda thing)

PLEASE help and answer as much of my questions as possibe because i'll try this for sure.

If you "just" follow the instructions given in that link, it should work? no other side-quests? Lol

cheers you guys own!!
this site ALWAYS provides
I basically followed the instructions given in the guide I linked, it's pretty straight forward but like I said I'm not sure if it will work with current updates I tried this a long time ago. Hey who knows it might even work with larger SD cards thanks to the most recent Wii update. Give it a shot
Back then all I did was throw the converted file onto an SD card and select it like an image and it played but you can't fast forward, rewind etc. I did this until I got a PS3
You cannot copy long movies (over 15-30 minutes) to SD cards due to limitations on the Wii
