I heard the governments going to give $500 rebate to students buying laptop for study. Is this true, can I get some info on this?

Never heard of that exactly, but you may be entitled to an educational discount (which usually equates to GST free) You should get student prices on software too which makes productivity software quite cheap.

Educators (including school teachers and admin staff) are also often entitled to educational discounts.

Duh, who do you think gave birth to chuck norris?
I did a project on this last year. If i remember my research correctly, the money was to go towards the schools, and it was the schools to decide whether they would use it for updating their current computers, renting laptops to students, or rebating laptops for students.
This could pay for my Asus eee pc!

Yeah, I did some research on it recently, and that's what I found as well.

They assure you it's going to your future!
Yeah Last year we raised $1000 for charity and they just spent it on the staff room

Here's the official Education Tax Refund statement:

The Government will introduce a new 50 per cent Education Tax Refund from 1 July 2008. Parents entitled to Family Tax Benefit Part A, or whose school children receive Youth Allowance or similar payment, will be able to claim:

* a 50 per cent tax refund of up to $750 in educational expenses for each child undertaking primary school studies (that is, a refund of up to $375 per child, per year)

* a 50 per cent tax refund of up to $1,500 in education expenses for each student undertaking secondary school studies (that is, a refund of up to $750 per child, per year).

So if you are a secondary student that $1500 laptop you're thinking of buying will only cost you $750 after the rebate. And it has to be claimed when your parents lodge a tax return next year.

Think of it, a MacBook for $750! YES!!!

Higher education (university) is practically ignored in the budget. we need laptops more. besides, we dont play CS and warcraft during class.

that's why you skip the lectures and play it at the student bar

the education rebate covers the following expenses:

* laptops
* home computer and associated costs
* home Internet connection
* printers and paper
* education software
* school textbook materials (including prescribed textbooks, associated Learning materials, study guides and stationery)
* prescribed trade tools.

If this happens. I'll buy it and claim it as my brothers.
so wait, if the laptop is $500 i get $250 rebate?
Why would you ever buy a $500 Laptop?
You're just asking for fail and aids.

So i'm guessing university students don't get any such luck with the rebate? It was pretty much us (not me i voted libs ) that put the labor govt into power and we get scrapped because we are the ones that actually need them...
Besides how many public school kids would actually have a laptop for longer than 5 days without it being destroyed by other dumbasses?

Such is the intelligence of Kevin Rudd
Yeh... I agree, I think we have one person in our school with a laptop, and to deny it to UNNI students? wow.
