"Next-gen will fail if not digital-only"

by Jake Galouzis Featured 27 Comments 24 Votes 1785 Views 06/07/2012 Back to News

Codemasters co-founder turned head of mobile gaming company Kwalee, David Darling, has posted a blog entry on the firm's website and stated that the next generation of consoles "need to be digital only, or they will fail".

"Consoles have become like dinosaurs heading for extinction as their natural retail habitat begins to change. These ancient beasts must now adapt to a new environment where platforms like Steam, Facebook and Apple’s App Store are pushing innovation. People are already playing more games through digital download than physical media. For instance, Angry Birds has had more than one billion downloads, a sales figure totally beyond what can be achieved by boxed games sold in the likes of Game and GameStop."

"With digitally distributed games we can cut out physical production, warehouses, distributors and retailers. We can publish our own games, reducing our costs so that we can deliver fun experiences to players for far less cost than a console game. Therefore it is no longer necessary to charge people huge prices to play video games."

Read the entire blog entry to understand gain a clearer view of his radical opinion.

Do you agree with Darling's claims?

I agree. He does raise a good point when he mentions innovation/profitability, but at this point in time the world is nowhere near ready to go digital-only.
what a complete dickhead [Facepalm]
Lol he has never lived outside a city then.
He doesnt realise that the infrastructure just isn't up to speed yet to handle people only downloading their games. Uncharted 2 is a 18 gig download and uncompressed on the hard drive is 36 gig. That's more than 10 of my hard drive and a sizeable chunck of my download quota just for one game, and I can only imagine games getting bigger and bigger.
If by 'fail' he means next gen consoles not fully achieving their profit potential then yeah....

But the industry isn't going to collapse if next gen isn't digital only

What?

You can't compare that. They are totally different. Mobile games are accessible to just about anyone with a dollar, and are able to be played just about anywhere. Of course it will sell more than a $109 game that can only be played in your home, there's little to no risk with buying a mobile game, as it's only dirt cheap. More digitally downloaded games are being played because more people have phones than dedicated game consoles, more people are okay with wasting/using a dollar to buy a game, people don't have to wait for long downloads. Angry Birds just came in at the right time, at the right price which ushered in the rise of mobile gaming.

This guy is off his nut, changing everything to digital distribution won't do anything, if much, for sales. I don't want to have to wait for a 7-9GB download to finish on my Xbox to be able to play the game, and that's not even factoring in the potential size of next gens games.

About to say the same thing

<10mb vs 8gb+ [Facepalm] [Shifty]
I'll have both thanks... douche.
Exaggerated to get his point across. It's painfully obvious.

Does he actually mean it will "fail"? Of course not. That's insane. He is, however, making a point on the growing significance in the growing DD market insofar as it is the future of game distribution.

It's better to strike while the iron is hot, as it were.
still a douche though.
Very very exaggerated :P. Surely more functionality(both physical and digital) will make it less likely to 'fail'. I don't think we are at the point technologically where a 'digital only' console will be long term viable, and not just in australia. An appropriate harddrive size would cost a third of the total manufacturing cost. Infrastructure and technology worldwide need to be improved, as games get bigger faster then harddrives do.
look man it's like buying a car but you get no paper work
if i'm spending over 50 dollars i want hard copy shit too

surely the pspgo was a good example of that? much bigger games then something you'd get on a smartphone.

I'd like to wipe that smile off his face...

Gives him a digital finger

See its not the same...
This dude looks like a hipster Jason Schwartzman :P
the only way to properly sell games digitally is to offer them as cards, not a generic card (like eShop/iTunes/PSN/XBL etc) but to have each title as a card where retailers can have games at a competitive price all the time.. otherwise no one will go the rip off price of the console's shop (not counting iTunes. as much as i love apple and iPods, they aren't really consoles)

its simple... themed cards, codes activated on confirmation of payment at register. infinite stock. only printing tiny little bits of cardboard (plastic cards if they want). cheap to do, easy to merchandise. Success!

Heres an idea, put QR codes on them too so ppl can scan it on their phone and watch the trailer rather that try and read the back and look at 2-3 pissy little screenshots
We are really no where near ready yet we will first need a 1t terabyte hard drive that dosnt cost just like $300 just for the hard drive. I have about 20-25 Xbox games at 8gb each and some having 2 or 3 discs (Xbox y u no have blu ray!!). That comes to a total of 200gb and that's not including DLC which is like a Gigabyte each (map packs) With games getting more detailed graphics and more content we are going to need a big hard drive and I have decent Internet and it takes me about 30-60 minutes to download like a GB for a game I don't want to buy a game and have to wait 8hours to play it
This guy has obviously never used the Internet outside of America.

I agree to, I just don't think people are ready yet, I am though =D
Digital only means higher prices due to lack of competition. It can work on pc as there can be limitless online stores competing with one another, but with console you will only have the one store and will be paying full RRP for everything [Facepalm]
This is amazing how like only a few months ago we had this topic going dd vs hard copy and so many of you and most of you that have commented on here where jumping down my throat cause i was saying Australia's internet wasnt ready for just dd. now you all have changed your tones. :D

I'm ready but I do feel bad for those who aren't that's why my mind has changed.. Maybe in 20 years time but not now, :)

Just what exactly type of internet connection you have? I have a cable connection, and at 100mb/s 1Gb is less than 10mins, quicker sometimes.
As I mentioned in another article, Australia's ISP download limit needs to be scrapped and speeds dramatically increased. Even with the NBN project, consumers will still be limited to max 100mb/s (same as cable), and limited to a certain number of Gbs/mnth (at a higher price than current). That's still inappropiate, and if companies push into only 'digital download' for console, then will create major hassles for console gamers in this country. RIP consoles.

i still want physical because my internet couldn't be used to download heaps of games because it drops out heaps of times and stuffs up my downloads.

i would be happy if we have the option of both, so people like me can get physical and people with faster internet and better connection can get digital.

plus i like the look of physical games on my shelf and if i have had enough i can just trade it in for something else.

another thing is that games are much bigger on consoles then iPod and Android games. so if i downloaded a few games, that would be most of my internet gone for the month

I think this guy is off his nut talking about this stuff.
If its digital only then I'll skip it. I dont want to pay $50 extra on internet a month.

Probably, although I'd like to use digital-only versions of the PS3 and 360, and games released digitally at the same time as retail counterpart. If you offer both, I think people will eventually go digital, but for consoles the best option atm is a disc, because digital is still far too expensive.
