RUMOR: Wii Shop Channel to get demos, subscriptions, and rentals

NeoGAF has claims he has stumbled upon a deep Nintendo secret buried in a program's source 'javascript' files of the Wii Shop Channel.

var NO_WIFI = 0; /* no WIFIFREE or WIFIPAY */
var WIFI_PARTIALLY_CHARGED = 1; /* partially charged WIFI */
var WIFI_FREE = 2; /* WIFIFREE only */
var WIFI_ALL_CHARGED = 3; /* all charged WIFI */

That looks like something about the Pay to Play service, while he also claims that the above code relates via 'hints' that demos and downloadable content maybe coming even at a small charge in addition to the Wii shop channel.

Basicly from what I understand the above code is registering variables into the run-time of the program. The bottom one is the most interesting as it put it in and sets it to a high '3', plus has in it's context 'WIFI_ALL_CHARGED'. Odds are this is for when you look at an item; so the wii can figure out what type of payment is required(?)

Nice little find this. Lets hope it is a small charge and not something expensive.
This would also tie in with the thought of some extra pay as you play dlc for some wii-ware titles.
Nah, I doubt that it is anything that interesting.

This most likely would have been there from day one.

Credit card transactions usually work by an initial check to see if funds are available prior to the transaction taking place.

In this case it is checking with against a registry/database to see if said wii account has necessary funds (wii points) after which the 'are you sure that you wish to purchase...' prompt appears, followed by the download.

Demos' would be nice but I doubt the big N will mess with the current strategy.
great find i hope its true

YEr
It has already been announced that we'll be getting ds demo downloads on some form of channel on our Wiis. Wii demos, however, will probably never happen, they'd have to be pretty big. Unless we all get that damn hard drive

Some of the new WiiWare titles will have extra downloadable content.

As for rentals? I've stated many-a-times that I'd love to be able to have some kind of try-before-you-buy thing with the VC titles. But this won't happen, for the simple fact that it would be very handy indeed, and people seem to enjoy making things complicated
