Super Mario Galaxy 2 is for Hardcore Gamers

Super Mario Galaxy, released in 2007, was a game which appealed to both casual AND hardcore gamers in the way it presented itself: The basic gameplay and storyline could be completed by any casual gamer, while the hardcore gamers were able to go through the challenge of finding and collecting some very hard stars.

However, Shigeru Miyamoto, in the latest edition of Nintendo Power, has told us that the next Mario adventure/platformer, Super Mario Galaxy 2, will be geared more towards the hardcore gamers.

He stated that while they still wanted the game to be accessible to new gamers, it's main target audience was hardcore gamers and those who have played through the first game (and become better players).

Here's what he had to say:

'I do believe that there is a lot here to appeal to the more veteran and more experienced gamers, and I think it’s a title that they will obviously enjoy, but I really took it into consideration and tried to do our best to create a game that’s accessible to new gamers as well. And, you know, we also built it with consideration that we believe that people who played through the first Mario Galaxy have become better players.'

The focus on hardcore gamers is definitely showing us that Nintendo is trying to appeal to everyone, not just casual fans.

One thing that might be looked at more closely is the way Shiggy said that Nintendo will assume players of earlier Wii titles will have 'gotten better'. This could mean that, a few years after the Wii's release, hardcore gamers might start seeing a flow of hardcore games as Nintendo start to target the audience that has stuck with Nintendo for so long.

Galaxy 2 is expected to be released in all regions in 2010.

I'm really hoping that Nintendo starts applying what they've done here (casual gamers getting better) to more games so that we can see a good flow of hardcore gamers.
Mario games (excluding Kart, Party, etc) have always been hardcore games. But definitely more hardcore games for the Wii!
"Nintendo will assume players of earlier Wii titles will have 'gotten better'"

NO. He means that people who played Galaxy have been acquainted with the concepts of planets and moving round them thus becoming better players. This is NOT a generalization and I am amazed you misunderstood this one.

Based on thr "reate a game that’s accessible to new gamers as well" Galaxy 1 had nearly 5 hard stars (definitely not the latter 60 as many reviewers mentioned) this is probably going to have like 20. Not a huge difference but an improvement nonetheless.

Just make it as hard as Mario 64 (last 3 worlds especially Rainbow Ride was hard due to the nature of the worlds) and I will be happy.
This is good news, I'll get a good challenge now!

I'm well aware of what he means, I was trying to compare the stance Nintendo has taken with Galaxy 2 to the possible standing of gaming on the Wii. Please note what I say after that very sentence.
still disagree. Nintendo are just saying "imagine those two games as one" and if anything the demo play is incorporated in NSMB Wii in order to MAKE players get better with games. Correct my if I am wrong but I have never seen a Nintendo game that was designed for "good" gamers since the SNES (ok Sunshine had those hard shines but the game could have been finished without them) and really this is nor going to change. This is just a "we are sorry for making galaxy 1 a walk in the park but planetoid movement may have scared away the less experienced players if it was too difficult.

Yes, maybe it will take more than five minutes to get a star, now. Of course, if the gamers actually tried to get all 120 stars, instead of getting the largest minimum to beat the game, then it would be harder than what the casual gamers would think.
I think I'm aware of the difference in a casual gamer (probably about 75 stars for Mario) and a hardcore gamer (ex: me, 117 stars as Luigi). So now, I'm looking forward to this game more than before.
By making the game for hardcore gamers, I expect it to have challenging ways to get the stars!

Collect the purple coins!

*facepalm*

Those purple coin challenges were an absolute joke.
Ohhh!I'm more interested in this now

yeah, its like the guitar hero franchise: making it harder for veterans and also keeping it simple for newbies
but now i need to buy galaxy
If they have open worlds like Mario 64, I'll buy it

If they have linear jumping from orb to orb, I'll give it a miss
2010 cant wait that long

great news seeing the first game was soooo fking easy
I got mario 64 when i was 5, my first video game ever. Til now, i still only have sixty something stars, even though that may be because i can't play it anymore because my controller screwed up. I gave up, and got bored with it within month and did schoolwork. My friend who got mario kart played it all the time and now is not very bright. So thank you super mario 64. Then i got galaxy and it was freakn awesome because i couldn't play all the time but when i could, i didn't have to spend millions of minutes and tries to get one measly star. Although it was too easy sometimes. I am not a casual gamer: i play at least 12 hours a week.
This is great news, as the first Galaxy was extremely easy for the first 100 or so stars.
lol i still laugh at the people who call themselves "Hardcore Gamers" I just hope SMG2 is not as dissapointing as SMG1.

Well the term "Non-Wii Gamers" just aggravates people....
Best.News.Ever.
Just what exactly does the term 'Hardcore' gamers mean? People who play games for 8-12 or so hours every day, or something else?

It means people who don't own a Wii
