Wii 2 wont be coming soon

At the recent Nintendo's Media Summit GameSpot has interviewed Cammie Dunaway, Vice president of nintendo, About some information about the Wii's eventual successor. Looks like Nintendo is aiming Wii 2 for a PlayStation 2 levels of success sale rate, which means we wont be hearing anything new for a couple of months.

With the question about the new console been asked, Camme Dunaway replied.

"I don't think it'll be anytime soon. Even though our install base is, at this point, five million households larger than the PS2 install base was at the same point in its life cycle, it still has a lot of room to grow. If you think PS2, there's been about 50 million sold -- Wii close to 28 million sold -- so it says to me there's still a big audience out there that we can access with Wii."

"We'll have it ready when we think the time is right."

Highly doubt it. If you wanted to say "we wont be hearing anything new until 2011 probably E3 2011" then yeah that would make more sense.

the wii is going away from the gimmicky value it had and turning into an actual games console, too bad people always manage to buy the shovelware instead of the actual good games.

Nintendo want to keep the mystery and keep their options open. Setting a date would probs put them under immense pressure

I think the Wii is just starting to really get good games, I don't think we will see another console for maybe another year.

Plus, there is still a lot of Nintendo series's that don't yet have a game for Wii, until Kirby, Star Fox and F-Zero get games, and Donkey Kong gets a GOOD game, I don't think we need a new console.

Good news. I don't feel like buying another console just yet. But also, I feel the Wii still has a long life ahead of it's self. As long as they keep supporting it, it'll be around. I'm going to say..2012 when a new Ninty console is out. For us anyways.

1) We won't ever see a "Wii 2" because there will never be one. Nintendo never simply tacks a number to the end of a console's name but rather always changes to a different name. The two closest names were the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, but here they added "Super" to the front rather than a number to the end. The next console won't have "Wii" in the name anywhere or a "2" at the end of it.

2) Saying they aim for a PS2 level of success doesn't mean they won't launch their next console in 2011 or 2012. PS2 didn't sell its 140 million units before PS3 launched in 2006, and Wii doesn't need to before the next console launches. It needs to sell beyond the next console launches, like PS2 did.

IceManPJN: I don't think anyone thinks the next Nintendo console will be called Wii2, it's just a temporary name people have given it so we know they are talking about it. A way to refer to the Wii's successor.

I think the PS2 sold that much for many reasons...

1) High failure rate caused people to buy more than 1.
2) It was marketed as a cheap DVD player.
3) The newer slim plus several price cuts promoted sales.
4) It's been around forever.
5) It's STILL being sold today.

I hope Nintendo doesn't pull a Sony and get rid of Wii/GCN backwards compatibility on their new system like Sony did with the PS3/PS2 just to keep the Wiis selling.

ehm concerning the PS3 emulation, it's not that simple. The Nvidia GPU is drastically different than the PS2 GPU architecture so while software emulation of the PSX on the PS3 is relatively easy, getting the PS2 games to work on the PS3 using software alone is a nightmare. The PS2 chip was removed in order to bring manufacturing costs down and was never put back on because sony want to end the PS2 lifespan as they have realized it actually does compete with the PS3 sales.

As for the Wii I got some bad news. Homebrewers have stated that unless the Wii2 is an extension of the current GC architecture (just like the Wii) there is no way on hell they could keep backwards compatibility. So we should be prepared for another low end system or we can kiss backwards compatibility goodbye. Then again ATI are working on Wii2's GPU so you never know how badly Nintendo want to keep this compatibilty.

I got another problem with the Wii2. Wiiware and VC, will we be able to transfer them or not because there is a very high chance we will not be able to.

I just cant wait for some Wii HD goodness. Xbox and PS3 have no chance if the new Wii has graphics to boot. Better graphics + the same great playability and controls = Legend 'wait for it' Dairyness!
