Wii Hardware hacked

by Matt Armitage Featured 36 Comments 48 Votes 820 Views 30/12/2007 Back to News

Not long after the Nintendo Wii was launched we saw region unlocking chips, and now just a little over a year later we bare whiteness to first full Wii hardware hack, this was announced at the 24th Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin.

They were able to find encryption and decryption keys by doing full memory dumps at runtime over a custom serial interface, this has now opened a window of opportunity for homebrew applications that don’t need to be run in Game Cube mode, so the Wii remote, Blue Tooth and USB ports can now be utilized. We should be seeing some very interesting things happen with the Nintendo Wii in the homebrew scene.

Here’s a video from the conference that shows this in action.

well maybe admin shouldve asked him to rewrite it ?
now the news is more accessable to the public. Don't worry about it guys.
Weren't there rules posted to the forums regarding news items, I'm sure there were, they really need to be made more prominant...
Nobody informed me that I should re-write anything, they just removed the post. Personally I thought that the video on the link spoke for itself, sorry that I didn't know how to post the youtube video. Flame me all you will but I only tried to make the news known.

Personally I think the news is brilliant!
Like it says any homebrew software will be good.
Versatility for the Wii is something that needs to be explored especially when it comes to that head tracking from the other article.
NERDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDS!!!!
good effort i say................
ASS ! I GOT AN ASS! who remembers what it means?
100 bucks if u answer
Nerds......
To the TWO IDIOTS calling these guys nerds:

Interesting to see if they release a software program similar to Action Replay or Gameshark. It is certainly within their reach.
This is very interesting...

Your PC, Wii, car, TV...hell, almost everything you use wouldn't be here today if it weren't for "nerds".

So GG, mate. Guess it's back to the jungle for you, eh?
Why didn't Nintendo do this in the first place? Couldn't they have made it so you choose whether you want to play normal or enchanced?
creepy.......
I am assuming that Nintendo will begin to make enhanced GC games.
alright. call me a noob if you like. but whats the point of home brew? educate me to the positives and the usefulness of home brew, im not talking about being able to watch dvd's or play cube games with the wiimote, im talking usefull stuff that i cant do anywhere else.

Im asking just for the sake of debate and conversation.
well, if it is anything similar to psp homebrew, homebrew lets you run un-official application on your wii. People will create small games and applications and they can be used. It also lets people use illegal stuff which i will not go into.

*correct me if im wrong about anything*

Ok so people will make some apps to run on the wii, but for what use? so i can play some dodgy garage version of tetris using the wiimote? There is home brew on the ds with the flash carts but im yet to find a useful need for a single app. I only put a negative spin on this cause people are devoting time and money to the project, for what use?

It's what the geeks call "fun". They enjoy picking encrypted blackboxes apart, reverse engineer it and understand how it works. Why? Because they have the intelligence to do so.

It may seem like a waste of time to you, but not to them. These people may grow up one day and control some of the biggest corporations in the world, inventing machines we can't even imagine right now. Be nice to 'em.

Instant Messenger (MSN, Yahoo! etc.), A better internet browser, A real multimedia player, a viable media centre solution, homebrew wifi wii games (wii port of cs?), emulators, MIDI synthesisers, VOIP or Skype through a bluetooth headset, hacks to use a harddrive, hacks to use usb adapters for other controllers, ebook reader, skins for your wii... theres heaps of applications. Sure not all of those are hella useful but homebrew gives more options as to how you use your wii.

I happen to use a lot of homebrew apps with my DS and find a lot of them incredibly useful (using your DS as a pc gamepad, and portable msn to name a few). Wether the time and money is proportionate to the market is disputable. I personally welcome the homebrew scene and hope for some incredible apps for the wii. I guess it depends on what type of person you are I guess.

The lack of homebrew was the reason I don't have my wii modded but this development could change that.

Its not their job, their job is data entry at telstra or something very very nerdy like that. They do it because
A. they dont have girlfriends
B. They think its cool(which is the cause of A)
C. their nerds

Its not like they are contributing to the good of all man kind by curing cancer or something. They are hacking a console so we can play a graphically inferior tetris or use a slow, clunky msn. Face it. There is nothing these guys can do that my unhacked already enabled pc or pda cant. Its a waste of time, nerdy time.

If im wrong, prove it. Show me a console hack that is usefull. Other than playing my "backups"

this is awesome i hopes he releases some exploits or something

ummm doesn't make sense
USB external hdd's....
Third Party OS'es
the possibilities are endless.....(nearly)
good news for all (even if you can't see the point of "nerds" doing this) nerds + geeks = my heroes!
It will be nice to plug a large USB HDD into my wii and place all of my games onto it. Then there will be no need to fumble around with DVDs.
