Wii U is not as powerful as current-gen hardware, according to a number of developers "familiar with the industry".
Games Industry reports that, while Nintendo's next console can generate full HD graphics, it won't be able to achieve the graphical prowess of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
"The graphics are just not as powerful," one source said anonymously.
Another developer said "there aren't as many shaders" although "some things are better".
However, the console can't quite reach the graphical heights of current hardware.
Referring to the similarities between developing for the PS3-PlayStation Vita combo and Wii U and its tablet controller, one source said: "You can do everything with that combo that you can with the Wii U, and more."
Gamers are expecting to learn more about Wii U at E3 in June ahead of the console's release in late-2012.
