Aliens: Colonial Marines developer, Gearbox, wants "people to be afraid" of the Xenomorphs, the horrifying alien creatures from the sci-fi series.
The game's design director, John Mulkey, says that the best way to scare people is to "have enemies that act in ways the player isn’t familiar with and doesn’t necessarily know how to react to", and build gameplay around that.
"The variety that the new multiple species bring to the game can be a powerful thing, both in terms of gameplay and tension," he said.
As for the game's accessibility to cooperative gameplay, Mr Mulkey believes that, as players "don’t always act in a predictable manner", the development team needed to accomodate that to maintain the edge.
"At points, it’s all-out action. Other times, it’s all about tension and scaring the crap out of people. That sort of thing can be harder to do in co-op because people tend to be more confident in a group, but at the same time, that makes it all the more powerful when the entire group is terrified and starts to lose it.”
