Epic: Unreal Engine 4 games 'could be ported to WiiU'

Epic's vicepresident Mark Rein said in an interview with Videogamer that Unreal Engine 4 games can easily be ported to the WiiU if developers desire. The engine is "supremely scalable".

However, Rein also states that Epic has no intention of bringing its next generation game development engine to the WiiU, and suggested that Unreal Engine 3 was a better fit for Nintendo's hardware.

"I'll state that I don't think it's our intention to bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U" he said. "But Unreal Engine 4 is going to be supremely scalable. We'll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could. But Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform."


To this Rein adds:

"We have Unreal Engine 3 running on Wii U, you saw games at the Nintendo press conference again this year - a fantastic demo by our friends at Warner Bros. showing Arkham City running on Wii U. And Aliens: Colonial Marines is coming on Wii U, that's also Unreal. There's, I'm sure, several others. Mass Effect was announced for it as well. So we're certainly playing a role there with Unreal Engine 3.


Recently, Fortnite was announced to be the first game running on Unreal Engine 4.

interesting news, it's starting to show developers really don't consider the WiiU as a next-gen console...

I was kind of hoping we'd see Unreal 4 at E3 running on Wii U, but it wasn't to be...

I am still cautiously optimistic about Wii U though. Every Nintendo console has had pre-release hype about launch titles and third-party support, and then it always drops off.

But Nintendo needs engines like Unreal 4 running on Wii U.

Running UE3 at full potential is favourable to running a scaled-back version of UE4, IMO.
For one, UE3 has been around for long enough to be hellishly stable, while scaling UE4 back to achieve the best balance of visuals and performance could take some time to perfect, or run into unexpected problems.
