A YouTube app has been released for U.S. Wii owners, Google has announced.
Downloadable through the Nintendo Wii Shop Channel, the new YouTube app appears fairly similar in functionality to the PS3 version, offering access to subscribed channels as well as popular and trending videos with the ability to filter content into genres such as games and sports.
The new YouTube app comes just a day before the Wii U will hit the U.S. and just under 2 weeks for its launch in Australia. The Wii U itself also offers a YouTube app.
When we began building the new YouTube app for Nintendo Wii, we wanted to make video playback smooth and beautiful. This meant squeezing the most available power from the console CPU and fitting the video decoding process within the tight bounds of available memory. After trying out several video encoding formats on Wii, we found that 360p WebM encoding performed the best. With the largest install base of current generation consoles, YouTube on Wii is the largest deployment of WebM video in the world today." -- Youtube Blog
The YouTube app for Wii will reportedly release for consoles in other territories in the coming months.
Better late than never?
